Two days ago someone asked me if I have a blog, and I suddenly remembered that I did. I’m terrible at keeping track of my life. It’s been that way since the first time I received a journal for Christmas. Seriously. When my parents moved out of my childhood home, I found an entire box containing journals and diaries with only one or two entries, in which I fiercely promised to become better at documenting my life.
Clearly, it’s been a lifelong struggle.
I think that I much prefer to live in the worlds that exist in my head instead of my own. I write down every facet of my imagination, but I can’t keep track of the mundane day-to-day.
Anyway, here we are. I crept back onto my blog partly because of a shameful obligation and partly because…
I have something exciting to share with you all!
I recently partnered with the endlessly creative Johannus M. Steger to bring some of my favorite quotes from the book to the side of a mug. Johannus is a great graphic artist and a fantastically patient person, and he seamlessly brought my vision to life.
One of my favorite scenes from The Changing Tide is when runaway pirate Alexander Mathew spots Emerala the Rogue for the first time. She’s cutting a cadaver down from a pike in the square (and managing to ruffle the feathers of too-serious soldier James Byron in the process). Alexander’s first impression of Emerala is that she is “filled to the brim with the wild sea”, and it’s a comparison that he continues to make throughout the trilogy.
Johannus created such a gorgeous image for the quote, and I’m seriously in love.
The second quote is a repeated phrase that carries through all three books, “gold blood bleeds red“. The first time readers see the phrase, a seer has hold of Nerani’s hand and speaks the words in a vision. Nerani doesn’t hear it again until she’s much older, once she’s met the gold-cloaked General James Byron. It’s a long winded prophecy, and it haunts her through the series, cropping up in all of the most unlikely places.
The color scheme for the quote seems fairly obvious here. I mean, gold and red. There’s not a lot of wiggle room. Johannus managed to take my vision for the graphic and make it above and beyond what I expected.
I’ve got some sweet merchandise headed my way, and I plan to host a mug giveaway for you all as soon as it does! In the meantime, you can certainly dive in and get your own Rogue Elegance gear off of the site.
Thanks, Johannus, for all your hard work, and thank you, readers, for letting Emerala the Rogue into your lives.
I promise to try (keyword, try) to be better at blogging. In the meantime, you can keep up with my shenanigans on my twitter handle, @KayAyDowling.
